Clarity Is Your Efficiency Dividend

When the market already understands you, you spend less to be chosen. Clarity is the cheapest growth strategy you have.

"The spotlight awaits for you, center stage. All you have to do is step up and claim it."

— Lenny Bruce, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

That's the fortune Lenny Bruce reads to Midge Maisel in a small New York Chinese restaurant in my favorite television series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It plays like a brilliant screwball comedy from the opening credits of the pilot to the last moment of the finale.

But that's not the point.

The point is, when that scene came on, I recognized the restaurant immediately. Because it's one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. It's Wo Hop, the second-oldest restaurant in Manhattan's Chinatown. It's been serving for nearly 90 years, and in 2022 the James Beard Foundation named it one of America's Classics.

A clear promise is cheap to keep.

Now here's the thing about Wo Hop. Same tile floor. Same waiters who've been there for decades. Same dollar bills stuck to the walls. Same food worth standing in line for. And there's always a line. It's hard to get in. And they don't have to spend a ton on marketing to keep it that way.

They do one thing really well: classic American Chinese food.

That clear reputation, that clear promise, keeps them thriving year after year after year.

That's the lesson I want to share today.

Clarity lowers your cost to be chosen.

In an earlier issue, I showed you how a clear brand earns you a pricing premium. That's the first half of the profit equation. Today we're tackling the second half, and the finance guy in me loves this one even more. A clear brand also lowers what it costs you to win business.

When the market already understands you, you spend less to be chosen. Every sale gets easier. Every pitch gets shorter. Every marketing dollar works harder. Because you're no longer paying to overcome confusion.

Clarity is the cheapest growth strategy you have.

Two clients. Same dividend.

Let me give you two quick examples.

The first is a professional services firm I've been working with recently. Excellent team, real value, just not very good at stating that value in the market. We got clear, consolidated what they do into a single sentence, and built a killer tagline to carry it. It's too early to share that work publicly, but their inquiries have jumped dramatically, and revenue is growing steadily.

The second I can name. It's Brainier, the company I told you about in an earlier issue. Clarity didn't just power three straight years of record sales and growth. It made them an attractive acquisition target for ClearCompany, delivering a strong return for everyone.

Building your career? It works the same way.

A killer LinkedIn profile hits and sticks. And it takes a lot less effort than competing in a sea of sameness.

One thing to try this week.

Make a list of everything you do in a given month to promote your business. All of it. Time on LinkedIn. Marketing. Sales calls. Everything. Be honest. The list is longer than you think.

Now imagine your value was so clear it stuck in people's minds from the get-go. Which of those activities could you eliminate or seriously reduce? Draw a line through them.

Take a look at what's left. Does that help you see where your time could go instead? Because right now, you may be feeding a hopper, competing on the same services and benefits every one of your competitors is claiming too.

The dividend that keeps paying.

Clarity is an efficiency dividend that pays back year after year.

That's an incredible financial return on top of watching your stock rise each and every year.
