Do You Have the Guts It Takes to Succeed?
Oct 05, 2026Most great reputations aren't built on a single heroic act. They're built on the unglamorous step almost nobody takes.
Wow. My second sports movie in the series.
"It ain't how hard you can hit. It's how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. It's how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done."
— Rocky Balboa
The Quote Every Man of a Certain Age Already Knows
Every guy I know over forty can quote that line.
And then a generation younger met the same lesson through Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed. Rocky now in the corner, passing the discipline forward. Same fight. New fighter. Same truth.
Rocky and Creed aren't beloved because they're the best fighters. They aren't. They're beloved because they're the ones who keep getting up. Round after round. Film after film. Decade after decade. They take the punch and step back into it.
That's not a boxing story. That's a brand story.
It's Stupid Simple. That's What Makes It Hard.
At its most fundamental, branding and marketing are stupid simple. You give a consistent message, repeatedly, over time. That's the work. That's the whole game.
Call it building your reputation. Call it getting your message to the people who need it. Call it building your brand. The fundamental act is the same.
In a noisy, distracted, crowded world, it is up to you to get your message out there. That message has to be consistent, or you confuse everyone. It has to be repeated, because when somebody finally needs you, you have to already be at the top of their mind. They are very unlikely to go to their second or third choice. You need to come first.
This is why I call this step Guts. Because you just have to do it.
The Work Behind the Work
All great heroic acts are built on repeated steps and routine, often boring, often challenging. That is what leads to mastery. That is what leads to success. The road is paved by simple tasks done again and again. It isn't exciting. It isn't a one-time act. It isn't about playing the algorithms.
It's about doing the work.
I have watched too many great businesses and remarkable leaders achieve far less than they were capable of. Not because the value wasn't there. Because they wouldn't do this last, unglamorous step.
Just Keep Swimming
"Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming."
— Dory, Finding Nemo
Personal confession. This is actually my favorite one, the one I reach for when I need the reminder. Not the Rocky speech. The forgetful blue fish.
Deceptively simple. But inside her single line is all the strength and determination it takes to succeed.
A boxer and a forgetful fish telling you the same thing. That should tell you how true it is.
HORAN and the 27 Fundamentals
One of the best examples of Guts I have ever seen is one of my longest clients, HORAN, now HORAN Wealth.
What makes HORAN remarkable is a culture they call the HORAN Way. It's built on twenty-seven fundamentals that keep them aligned: always placing the client first, always doing the work in service of the promise.
Here is the part most firms would never have the discipline to do. Those twenty-seven fundamentals get reviewed one per week, at the start of every meeting and every gathering.
One fundamental. Every week. For years.
It's the consistent, determined, repeated work of staying clear on who they are and what they are about. I have admired them for it for years. It is why they have grown into the firm they are today.
This is why their customer loyalty and retention are so strong.
Something to Try This Week
Pick one thing about your value that the market needs to hear from you more often. One sentence. One idea. One truth.
Write it down. Say it once a day this week, and again next week. Then start using it in conversation. Say it in every meeting where it belongs, in every post, in every conversation where someone could use it.
Here's the Truth I Want You to Never Forget
You are more than enough to achieve success. Your unique value will make you the Obvious Choice™. All you need now is to do that consistent and repeated work to get your message and reputation out there.
That's it. That's the whole game.
