From Search Engine to Answer Engine
Oct 05, 2026AI rewards the brands and leaders who are clear about their value, and skips the rest.
Hollywood Imagined It. Now You Use It.
For every revolutionary technology, there was a film that came first. For robots, it was the silent masterpiece Metropolis. For artificial intelligence, it was a delightful romantic comedy called Desk Set.
You probably never saw it, but you really should. (It's a $4 rental on Prime.) It imagines a supercomputer built to do research and deliver answers with amazing speed and accuracy.
And the real fun is watching Katharine Hepburn (the original Meryl Streep) and Spencer Tracy at their best, two equally sharp and funny minds delivering brilliant dialogue.
(A side note. It was written by Phoebe and Henry Ephron — parents of writer-director Nora Ephron. You may recall Nora Ephron from my earlier newsletter, "You've Got Mail.")
Your Buyers Stopped Searching. They Started Asking.
I'm telling you this because every big technology shows up in a story long before it shows up in our lives.
Well, it's a story no more. The machine that answers questions is here.
What this new technology has changed is how people find you, and whether they choose you.
So what wins now? The answer, still, is clarity.
The AI Machine Only Rewards the Clear.
In a search engine world, you could only hope you had enough keywords to somehow make the list.
In an answer engine world, that stops working.
Answer engines look for meaning. They want to give you an answer and a direction, not just a list. So they reward the clearest, most specific meaning.
If you have a clear, unique value and a clear brand story, you become part of the answer — even the lead idea. That's because an answer engine is looking to give you the best choice for your question, not just the options.
That means clarity gives you an even greater advantage than you had before.
But it isn't a free pass. You still have to do the daily work that drives your business and your career: good content, a real presence, a website and LinkedIn that carry your meaning into the world.
Same Firm. Clearer Story. Found.
Wellment Financial is a second-generation wealth firm in the greater Chicagoland area. Amazing team with a highly loyal client base that loved the experience.
But they had a very unclear brand, and they got lost against their competitors. They were further hampered by a bad name, FSR Wealth Strategies.
The CPA and tax-integrated approach was their clearest competitive advantage. Nobody else in their market owned it. So we made it the cornerstone.
We then helped them uncover their authentic brand, and what emerged was rooted in their deepest purpose: make retirement the best part of your life. Finding the right name from there was easy.
Now picture an answer engine reading the before and the after.
Before, it finds a firm telling three different stories in three different places. The website promised confidence. Facebook promised freedom. LinkedIn promised ownership of your retirement. Three promises, one firm, and a machine that reads all of it can't find the one thing to repeat.
After, it finds a single clear answer: the firm built on CPA and tax expertise, here to make retirement the best part of your life.
One version gets named. The other never comes up.
Same firm. Same people. Same expertise. The only thing that changed was the clarity.
"New clients are walking through the door, and our team is finally singing from the same songbook."
— Josh Bretl, President, Wellment Financial
Ask the AI What You're Known For.
Here is one thing to try this week:
Think about the one thing you want yourself or your business to be known for. Then go ask the AI platform of your choice to tell you about your firm or yourself. See if that comes up in the answer.
If it doesn't, you know what you have to work on first.
I'll be honest. When I read the answer about my own business, it makes me want to roll up my sleeves and drive even more clarity about what we do best for our clients.
Clarity Is Now Your Edge.
In this new world of AI and answer engines, clarity is the edge.
Whether it's your business or your career, that clarity, backed by a clear story, gives you an even greater advantage than you had before.
