Why the New Website Didn't Fix It

Why the New Website Didn't Fix It

the obvious choice newsletter Oct 27, 2026

It was the right investment. Just the wrong order.

Before you begin an important journey, you must determine where you're going. Otherwise, you just end up on a long hike.

Did you ever spend money on a new website and then not see your business improve?

Or maybe it was a new logo, and that didn't do the trick either. Or maybe you spent a long time on your LinkedIn profile and never saw a change from that either.

This happens all the time. And it’s not because it was the wrong thing to do. It was the right thing to do. Just not the first thing you should do.

They Came for a New Name. They Needed a New Story.

A professional services firm came to me for a new logo, a new name, and a new website.

When we dug in, I found out they had renamed themselves several times. Each name was a smart investment. None of them had moved the business.

So we did something different first. We got clear on why they should stand out versus everyone else. What was unique about them. What was valuable. What mattered most to their customers.

The Name Didn't Do It. The Clarity Underneath It Did.

Then we gave them the name, the logo, the website, and more. And it worked.

That new name gave them a reason to contact everyone they had ever connected with. Their clients. Their prospects. Everyone. And this time, they had a story worth telling. Today they are expanding and growing.

The name didn't do that. The clarity underneath it did.

You had the right investment. Just the wrong order.

  • Sequencing, not judgment. Your new marketing investment didn't work because of the order, not the decision.
  • Smart spend, partial result. You invested smartly in new elements. Without clarity, they couldn't get the whole job done.
  • Clarity first, or dollars only half work. Unless your unique value is clearly articulated, every marketing and sales dollar can only do part of its work.
  • Don't beat yourself up. Clarity is the hardest thing to uncover and the easiest thing to skip. What is closest and most valuable to us is the hardest to articulate.
  • Clarity makes everything you build work. Once you can describe your unique value and tell your story, every element starts doing its whole job.
  • Clarity first. Then the marketing. Articulate your unique value and story first. Then start the marketing.

This Week: Go Back to the One Thing You Already Paid For.

Pick one. The website. The logo. The LinkedIn profile. The deck.

Now write the one sentence that says why you should stand out versus everyone else. What is unique about you, what is valuable, and what matters most to your customers.

Then rewrite that one thing with the clear story. Watch what it starts doing.

And if that one sentence won't come, that's not a failure. That's the hardest part. I built something for it. Keep reading.

For the record, I don't actually like hiking. To me, a hike has to have a goal. Which is why I liked scouting. We always had an objective.

Clarity First. Then the Marketing.

That is how the remarkable become the Obvious Choice.

Great work gets you noticed. Clarity gets you chosen.

The website was never the problem.

The leaders and businesses getting overlooked aren't doing bad work. They're doing great work the market can't repeat. Here's the test: if a stranger asked what you do, could you answer in one sentence that makes them say, "Oh, that makes sense — I can see why you're different"? If not, that's not a marketing problem. It's a clarity problem.

After working with hundreds of businesses and more than a thousand leaders, I built a scorecard that finds where a story breaks down. I call it the Clarity Score™.

5 questions, 10 minutes. Answer fast, and score what's true in the wild — what other people can repeat when you're not in the room. One number that shows you exactly where your story is breaking down, and what to fix first.

The number isn't a verdict. It's the starting point for becoming the Obvious Choice™ in your market.
